The test uses static, distilled water—not chlorinated pools, salt water, or flowing conditions. Pressure from diving, water jets, or wave action exceeds testing parameters. Thermal stress from hot water or temperature changes can compromise seals faster than the lab environment predicts.
Manufacturer testing methods vary. Some use more rigorous protocols than others, and certifications don't account for wear over time. Micro-cracks, degraded seals, or manufacturing defects may not surface until real-world use.
IP68 also doesn't cover liquid damage from other substances. Soap, shampoo, and sweat can damage internal components differently than pure water.
Bottom line: IP68 offers real protection for accidental drops and brief water exposure. But it's not a license to submerge your phone intentionally in challenging conditions. Treat the rating as a safety net, not a guarantee.
