NASA'S CURIOSITY ROVER DISCOVERS MASSIVE POLYGONAL TERRAIN ON MARS

The polygonal formations, each measuring 1.5 to 3 inches wide, were documented in a 360-degree panorama captured on June 19th and 20th. While Curiosity has previously photographed similar polygonal fractures on Mars, NASA confirmed this represents the first time the rover has encountered them at such a massive scale. Polygonal fractures form when surfaces—typically mud or ice—contract and crack, creating geometric patterns. Scientists use these formations to understand Mars' geological history and past environmental conditions. The discovery in Valle Grande adds new data to ongoing research into Mars' terrain composition and the planet's ancient water presence. Curiosity continues its mission on the Red Planet, transmitting detailed observations that help researchers map Martian geology and assess conditions that could have supported microbial life. The rover, which landed in 2012, remains operational and continues exploring the Gale Crater region.
