NAT'S ROLE IN INTERNET CENTRALIZATION EXAMINED

NAT was introduced to address IPv4 address scarcity by allowing multiple devices to share a single public IP address. While solving an immediate problem, the technology created a dependency on centralized intermediaries to facilitate communication between devices behind NAT boundaries. This architectural limitation forced the development of workarounds like relay servers and centralized platforms, which grew into today's major tech companies. Services that could directly connect peers became economically viable only with centralized infrastructure to manage NAT traversal. The internet's original design assumed end-to-end connectivity.
